School for your children

Children aged 5 to 16 must go to school (compulsory education). Newcomers often start in a language class (newcomers class). You apply directly at a school nearby.

  1. Find a primary school (4–12 years) or secondary school nearby.
  2. For newcomers: ask about a language class or an international transition class (ISK).
  3. Register your child with their BSN and any school records from Syria.
  4. Ask about free school supplies, the school fund or a Stadspas (city pass).

  • Compulsory education starts at age 5 — register on time.
  • Go to parents' evenings; the school is happy to help.
  • Ask the municipality about pupil transport if needed.
